Heidelberg University: Defending Discipline Diversity and Academic Freedom

October 2025. © Philipp Rothe 2025On the occasion of University of Heidelberg's  639th anniversary Rector Professor Frauke Melchior called for maintaining a respectful and academically rigorous approach as well as for vigorously opposing nationalism, isolationism, calls for boycotts, and cancel culture. "One issue that continues to demand our utmost attention” she said, “ is how we can protect our university as an open space for discourse."

A panel discussion was dedicated to "Living Diversity: Aspiration and Reality." Various aspects of diversity were explored such as those shaped by gender, origin, personal challenges, or disabilities, including among students. "We must support students where they encounter barriers or where barriers arise," emphasized Dr. Rafael Klöber from the university's heiSKILLS Competence and Language Center. Gloria Buck from the Student Council's Autonomous Disability Office called for more resources for support services, while Charlotte von Knobelsdorff reported on the GUIDE system with its trusted advisors in all areas of the university. She is the head of UNIFY, the central university institution for family, diversity, equality, and anti-discrimination, which has established the broad network of contact persons for those seeking advice in difficult situations.
